Historic Downtown

The City of Riverside has a rich history. Nowhere can you better experience that history than in the historic neighborhoods adjacent to the downtown corridor. The downtown neighborhood was laid out in 1870 with a grid street pattern. This is surprising because it was long before the advent of the automobile and the custom of a grid layout. These over 14 square blocks of the city are overflowing with historic riches, including a dozen historic sites listed on the National Register of Historic places and over 30 city designated landmarks.

The Downtown Neighborhood is known for it's walkability featuring lovely tree lined streets and close proximity to entertainment, restaurants, and shopping. One of the crown jewels of Riverside, Fairmount Park, is located in this neighborhood. Built in 1926, this park was designed by the Olmstead design team from New York City and is the perfect place to go for a Saturday or Sunday morning walk or bike ride.

The distinct historic and walkable character of downtown are why we like this neighborhood so much.
